This magic sure comes in handy. I used it this morning to burn a pile of leaves in my backyard.

Giggling, I responded to Ted's text.

I expect a warm fire in your fireplace every time I visit.

It’d been two days since the men in the coven had received magical abilities, and Ted hadn’t stopped acting like a kid on Christmas morning. He wasn't simply excited to create fire out of thin air. He'd admitted that he felt closer to me in some way. We now shared a rare bond, both of us extraordinarily tied to the mountains.

Sally peeped over the edge of her habitat and licked her lips. Do salamanders have lips? Either way, I could tell she was hungry, so I opened a bag of dried mealworms and scooped a spoonful into her tiny bowl.

Whenever possible, I took Sally out into the woods and let her roam and eat live insects. Sometimes it just wasn't feasible to get her outside for mealtime, so the local pet store had been a lifesaver.

Sally turned her nose into the air and sniffed at the smell of chicken wafting from the kitchen. Bertha had insisted on making Sunday dinner for us, and I hadn’t dared tell her no. Her fried chicken was amazing, not to mention the mashed potatoes and gravy and homemade green beans she typically made as sides.

"I forgot my special seasoning." Bertha made her way into the living room. "The chicken's done, just leave it alone on the counter. I'll be back in just a bit."

I nodded and waved as she walked out the front door.

The cauldron caught my eye. I hadn't tried to summon Florie for a few days. Lela was in the shower and Harriet was working on a school assignment in the camper, so this was as good a time as any. It was rare for me to be in the living room alone.

Sally eyed me as if she could read my thoughts.

"Don't worry, Sally. You can stay." I rubbed her smooth back with one finger. "Florie doesn't seem to mind when you're nearby." Hopefully, I’d finally get some answers.

I made my way to the cauldron and rubbed the side as if my life depended on it. Bertha would be back soon and Lela's shower had been running for at least twenty minutes. That didn't mean much, though, as she tended to stay in long enough to have a nice lobster-like glow from the scalding hot water.

The air turned cold and a mist rose out of the cauldron. Florie appeared and looked around as if making sure there was no one else in the room.

I didn't waste any time. "Why can you only appear to me?"

"I’m drawn to your powers; they give me the energy to appear. The more folk in the room, the harder it is for me to be seen." Florie smoothed her apron. “When anyone else is here, it's too muddled for me to find just your magic."

So it wasn't that she only wanted to appear to me.
